Kagero
Japanese Gypsy Rock Band

"Echoes of bossanova, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, everything sounds like this band should be performing in a Paris café to a room full of expatriates.                   -Ben Kreiger, Jezebel Music

Kagero's gypsy-flavored acoustic rock is knocking New York's indie scene on its tushy. The sound has been described as a melting pot of tonalities and rhythms from Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Kagero pulls their core rock sound from David Bowie and Neil Young, and adds the gypsy flavor of the violin found in the works of Stephane Grappelli. With a high-energy show that entices even the most jaded hipster into busting a gleefully bohemian move, Kagero's world music goulash is very tasty – even if you don't always know what's you're eating. Just call them your local neighborhood urban-gypsophonic, border-jumping, international debtor's prison groove-loving feelgood band next door

The Small Noise Sessions featuring:
Jodelle

Singer-songwriter and pianist Jodelle hails from New Jersey where she was born, raised and classically trained in piano and voice.  “All Save One,” featured on SHOF’s 2007 New Writers CD, can also be found on her latest release, “The Adventures of Jodelle.” Since its release in October 2004 on Jodelle’s own Espionne Records, “The Adventures,” continues to receive radio airplay and critical acclaim. Two other songs from “The Adventures,” “Shrinking Violet” and “Rabbit Cage,” received honorable mentions in the 13th Annual Billboard World Songwriting Contest.  The success of her latest CD went noticed by Performing Songwriter Magazine who named Jodelle one of their “Top 12 DIY Picks” (Dec. 2005), as well as Keyboard Magazine who named Jodelle their “Unsigned Artist of the Month” (June 2006). Jodelle tours regularly and has performed at industry showcases such as CMJ and SXSW.  In between running her label and writing songs for independent films, Jodelle is readying her next release which is expected late 2008 or early 2009.

 Luthea Salom
Reflections of Luthea's nomadic and bohemian upbringing are evident throughout her skillfully crafted songs. Having grown up, traveled and lived in so many different parts of the world, this young, multicultural and multilingual artist couples her life with her music, proving to be a unique charismatic universe worth discovering. Legends like LOU REED, PATTY GRIFFIN and EMMYLOU HARRIS are full of praise for this young talented upcoming international artist.

Mare Wakefield
Every star in the sky will shine for you.  In the refrain of Ironwood opener, “Enjoy the View,” Mare Wakefield might just be singing from experience. The girl from Southeast Texas went from playing Oregon coffee shops to headlining major Northwest festivals before a songwriting scholarship brought her to Boston’s Berklee College of Music which boasts alums such as Gillian Welch and Aimee Mann (two of many artists that Mare has been compared to). Currently based in Nashville, Mare--pronounced Mary--continues her upward trajectory by co-writing with hit songwriters and burning up the highways with her fourth studio album in tow.  The aptly named Ironwood radiates strength with every song, including the woman who calls out all liars in, “Enough Bad Love,” the gun-toting girlfriend in “Slimeball,” and the tongue-in-cheek barfly in “Whiskey Does it Better.”  Mare celebrates the release of Ironwood with a 5-week tour of the Western US, then heads to Holland and Germany before hitting the Northeast.Check marewakefield.com for more tour info.
Jan Bell
Jan Bell grew up in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, England, and spent several years on the back roads of north america, learning songs from the rural south and mountain towns. When she first heard the songs of women such as Mother Maybelle, Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard - she felt right at home.  Wherever she goes, people always ask how come an english girl is singing so many american folk songs? Jan reckons the root of many of the songs she loves, are back in the coal mining country side where she was born and raised.  "Sometimes the main difference is in the name of a river, a town, a girl or a boy - but the melodies, and the stories are essentially the same. When folks from northern Britain sailed across the Atlantic- especially if all they knew was mining - they often settled in the Appalachian mountains. For generations, they stayed there, and the music was not only kept alive - but thrived. When i first went to Virginia and Kentucky, I could hear broad Yorkshire in the way people spoke. They had to be true dreamers, to get on the boat back then, and you can hear all that sheer hope and faith and courage in the songs."

Laura Gould
Laura Gould, an Iowa native by name and wanderlust at heart now makes NYC her home and is jumping into the music scene head first.  With the addictive hooks known to pop music and the depth of a folk singer, Laura's beautiful melodies will take hold of you.

Singing with untainted sincerity, her songs invite you
to join in the intimacy of music and the beauty that
comes out of life's lessons.  Regardless of age,
gender, and background they are the story lines we
all can relate to.  Laura is in every aspect an upcoming artist to keep your eye on

Daniel Goodman
Folk / Folk Rock
After earning a degree in Jazz performance Daniel returned to his first love, traditional American folk music. His writing style comes from many diverse sources, including the earlier ballads of Stephen Foster as well as the traditional music of the Appalachian region. The revival of folk music in the 1940's through the 1960's has had a profound effect on Daniel's music and lyrics, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and, of course, Bob Dylan. Daniel's lyrics have also been strongly influenced by the works of Nick Drake, Jim Croce,Patti Smith and Jackson C. Frank. The musical legacies of Blind Willie McTell,Leadbelly,Dock Boggs,Bascom Lamar Lunsford,Lemon Jefferson as well as the musical dicoveries of John Jacob Niles have also contributed greatly to the context of both his music and lyrics

9:30-11:00pm

John Young
Classic Rock / Rock / Progressive
The songs and stories cover many aspects of life war, love, family, dumbing down, poverty
and even the music business! The show can range from soft and deep to powerful and evocative from singer/songwriter to a one man Pink Floyd. Combine this with John's sense of humor (well he is from Liverpool!) and you have the recipe for a great evenings entertainment.
The concert will appeal to an eclectic audience who thrive on original intelligent music.

News: John has just been voted the best (indie) male singer by the Progressive Rock Hall of Fame for 2008

“Manross’ rafter-rattling vocals can shatter even the hardest heart.
–Charlotte, NC’s Creative Loafing

"Melding the heartache of alt.country to the soul of acoustic Americana, Nathan's "Glide" EP is a stirring, thoughtful collection of mini-revelations that grow in beauty with every listen."                    -Nevin Martell,
                                                        Music Journalist
Filter Magazine and Author of Beck:The Art of Mutation

Neil's debut EP, Glide, featured two songs in the film "Descent," starring Rosario Dawson. He strongly recommends you rent this powerful film from first time director Talia Lugacy. She also used "Gone (Fly Away)" off Neil's Motor City Recordings SP, produced by Bobby Harlow from The Go. Neil recently completed his debut LP with Bobby in Detroit. It features Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) on piano and organ, Jon Krautner (The Go) on bass, Joey Mazzola (Sponge, Detroit Cobras) on guitar, Kenny Tudrick (Kid Rock, Detroit Cobras) on drums, and Danny Metric (The Paybacks, The Muggs) on guitar.

Neil knows in his heart of hearts that this record is special and believes you will agree. If you're nice to him, he will get you an advanced copy.

Neil's new covers EP, Songsmiths was produced by Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner, it features unique and soul stirring versions of ELO's "Do Ya," Small Faces' "All or Nothing," Beethoven's "Fleur de Lise," and Laptop's "I'm So Happy You Failed." Neil's folky take on "Do Ya" will be featured on Showtime's Californication on October 26th. Jeff Lynne loved it, which makes Neil smile on sad days.
